Abstract

After a preliminary definition of the term „meaning“ as something connected to the function of a thing the attention is shifted towards the definition of philosophy as a theoretical discipline. But theory is defined with the help of its opposite practice in the same way as beauty is possible only thanks to ugliness and right hand thanks to left hand. If a theory is not applicable in practice, it is a mere speculation. But a theory of meaning or truth, to which modern analytical philosophy aspires, does not make us more truthful or improve our expressive capabilities. For theories in science it is always clear in advance which results will confirm them and which will reject them. Philosophy is no theory and its questions have no function, thus no meaning.
