Abstract

Augustine’s authoritative analysis of lying as always wrong shaped the medieval discussion, while later writers, such as Grotius and Milton, claimed that in some cases lying is permissible. The proposed compromise sees lying as always wrong because it is an untruth with the intent to deceive, but not all cases of intentional untruth need to be lies.
